Do Card Suits Matter in Teen Patti?

Published 24 October 2026 · Updated 24 October 2026

Four playing card suit symbols — hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades — beside three Teen Patti cards

In standard Teen Patti, suits (hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades) don't rank against each other — no suit is "higher" than another when comparing hands of the same type. Suits only matter within certain hand types, specifically for forming a Flush (three cards of the same suit) and a Pure Sequence (three consecutive cards of the same suit).

Where suits genuinely matter

Flush (Colour). Three cards of the same suit, not in sequence. The suit itself isn't ranked — any flush beats any non-flush hand of a lower category, regardless of which suit it is.

Pure Sequence (Straight Flush). Three consecutive cards of the same suit. Again, which specific suit doesn't matter for ranking — a pure sequence in hearts and a pure sequence in spades of the same card values are equal.

Where suits do NOT matter

  • Trail/Trio (three of a kind) — suit is irrelevant since all three cards share the same rank, not suit.
  • Sequence (Run) — three consecutive cards of mixed suits. The sequence itself is what counts, not which suits are involved.
  • Pair — two cards of the same rank plus a third card. Suit plays no role in ranking.
  • High Card — suit has no bearing on comparing high-card hands.

A common point of confusion

Some players assume one suit outranks another, carried over from games or folk rules where that's sometimes true locally. In standard Teen Patti rules (and in essentially every app that follows them), no suit hierarchy exists. If you're playing a private home game with a house rule that says otherwise, that's a local variation — not the standard game.

Why this matters practically

Misunderstanding suit ranking can lead to disputes at the table or confusion about why a hand you thought was stronger lost. Knowing exactly where suits matter (flush and pure sequence formation) and where they don't (everything else) resolves most of this confusion in one read.

Frequently asked questions

Does a spade flush beat a hearts flush in Teen Patti?
No. Flushes of the same card values are equal regardless of suit — no suit outranks another.
Do suits matter for a Trail (three of a kind)?
No — a trail's rank is based on the card value, not suit, since all three cards share the same rank anyway.
What's the only time suit composition affects a hand's category?
Forming a Flush (same suit, not in sequence) or a Pure Sequence (same suit, in sequence).
Is suit-ranking a common house rule in home games?
Some private games use local variations, but it's not part of standard Teen Patti rules or how most apps implement the game.
