Teen Patti vs Rummy: What's the Difference?

Published 12 October 2026 · Updated 12 October 2026

Three-card hand beside a thirteen-card rummy hand grouped into sets, comparing Teen Patti and Rummy

Quick answer: Teen Patti is a three-card betting game won by holding the best hand at a show, while Rummy is a 13-card game won by arranging cards into valid sets and sequences and declaring first. Teen Patti is faster and built around betting; Rummy is built around drawing, discarding and planning.

Both are popular Indian card games and both are often offered side by side on gaming platforms, so they are easy to mix up. They are very different to play.

How Teen Patti plays

Three cards are dealt face down. Players bet in turn, blind or seen, and fold ("pack") when they do not want to continue. When two players remain, one can ask for a show and the best hand wins. The key skills are reading opponents and managing your stake. Learn the basics in what Teen Patti is and the rules guide.

How Rummy plays

Each player holds 13 cards. On every turn you draw one card and discard one, aiming to form sets (same rank) and sequences (consecutive cards of one suit). You need at least one "pure" sequence, and the first player to arrange everything validly declares and wins. The key skills are memory, planning and card counting.

What a typical round looks like

Teen Patti, four players, boot 10. Everyone puts in 10, making a 40 pot. Three cards each are dealt. Player one stays blind and bets 10, player two looks and bets 20, player three packs, and player four looks and calls 20. Play circles until two remain and one asks for a show. The whole hand can finish in two or three minutes.

Rummy, two players. Each receives 13 cards and one card starts the discard pile. On each turn a player picks up a card, either from the stock or the discard pile, and discards one. Over perhaps ten or fifteen turns, each tries to arrange their cards into sets and sequences, including at least one pure sequence. The first valid declaration wins, and the loser is scored by the value of unmatched cards.

Skill and chance

Both games involve luck in the deal. Rummy has a larger planning element across many turns, while Teen Patti outcomes depend more heavily on the three cards you are dealt, with skill showing up mainly in betting. How each is treated legally can differ by state, so read Is Teen Patti a game of skill or chance? and our legalities page.

Variations in each game

Teen Patti has local variations such as Muflis, AK47 and Joker. Rummy has formats too: points rummy, pool rummy and deals rummy, which vary how rounds are scored. Always read the table or app rules before playing.

Common mix-ups

  • "Rummy has betting like Teen Patti." In standard Indian Rummy there are no betting rounds within a hand. You settle at the end according to the format.
  • "Teen Patti has melds." There are no melds in Teen Patti. You hold a single three-card hand.
  • "Both use hand rankings." Only Teen Patti compares ranked hands.
  • "The apps are interchangeable." A platform that offers rummy may not offer Teen Patti. Check the game list first.
